Self Help Housing
Self
Help Housing helps low-income individuals and families become home
owners.
The
Self Help Housing Idea
Home—it
is the center of our lives. A place to call your own is what most
of us wish for and work toward but for many it is just a dream.
Junction
City Mutual Self Help Housing has helped 47 families reach that
goal. Participating families work together to build each home, learning
the value of teamwork and promoting self-esteem. The result is "sweat
equity" which provides the down payment. These groups share
the goal of home ownership and commit themselves to working cooperatively
to make that goal a reality for all of them. The Self Help idea
works because people want to make better lives for themselves and
their families. Given the opportunity, they will do everything they
can to make the dream of owning a home come true.
The
Self Help idea builds more than just homes--it builds friends and
communities. And it revitalizes neighborhoods, establishes credit,
and builds new skills and confidence.
It
is about pride and having a place to call home.
The
City of Junction City's Mutual Self Help Housing Program is funded
by a grant to the City of Junction City from USDA Rural Development.
